Very Easy Home Network

Ahhh yes, life’s pretty sweet with that high speed DSL line. But there is a glitch. The normal ISP dial up account can be used from any computer in the world. A DSL line connects to only one computer.

The obvious solution would be to install a network to carry the line to every computer in the house. I've steered clear of a having network in my home office. I once spent several days trying to hook up 2 computers using Windows 95, and finally gave up after only intermittently being able to make the computers communicate. I swore that my days on the floor with my computers were over and I ran my own "network" by transferring Zip disks from one computer to another.

A new technology is on the horizon, the Home PNA (Phone Networking Alliance) network. I remembered reading about this network that would connect through existing home phone lines. It was in its infancy - so I checked around.

HPNA has made some amazing strides. Now in version 2.0, it will run your home network at ethernet speed, 10Mbps (ten megabytes per second - the same speed as a real corporate network) and extend your high-speed internet connection to anywhere in your home or office. After checking out all the reviews, the same name kept coming up: Netgear.

Netgear offers a home PNA card that not only is plug and play, but also allows you to talk on the phone while using the network. Netgear's "do-not-disturb" feature causes it not to completely take over the phone line, nor will talking on the phone degrade the speed of the network connection.

The card was simple enough to install, just open the computer case and snap it into an available slot. Of course, this is usually the time that things go sour - when you start up the computer. Amazingly, "plug-and-play" was never easier. At first glance the instructions supplied on a single page fold-out sheet look like they’d never do the trick, but they do. Netgear includes a CD with all the software that you need. No need to search for the required drivers, their set-up program takes you step by step. Within a few minutes, you’ll be able to print a page on a remote computer’s printer or share files.

My teenage daughter installed the network on her own computer, and we can now share printers, files, a CD-burner and internet connections without using our "sneakernet" of the past.

My favorite part of the setup is the new Home Network USB adapter. I clipped the small unit to the back of my laptop, and literally within seconds, connected to my other computers!

If this sounds too easy, it probably is. I’m no techie and it worked for me on first try. One caveat though, when it comes to sharing a high speed internet connection over a Home Network line, there are a few more steps. You need to set up a TCP/IP connection. My advice? Don’t even attempt to do it unless you know what you’re doing. Call Netgear’s 24/7 tech support at 888-NETGEAR. They’ll patiently walk you through it, step by step.

I feel like I've really accomplished something, it's not "black-magic" any more. I have a flawless network that I never realized could be as useful as it is. I have a warp speed internet connection that goes beyond my wildest dreams. I passed the boundaries from novice to geek with the help of modern technology. Now my mornings are complete. I can stay that extra ½ hour in bed, watching Matt Lauer and Katie Couric on the Today show. No need to zoom into the office to check my auctions and email. I can just plug the laptop into the phone jack and fly like the wind.

CPUs/Processors – The Brains of Your Computer

Spend any time around computer geeks and you will certainly hear the term ‘CPU’ at one time or another. For most people, a CPU is just something that every computer needs to work. However, if you are inclined to learn a bit more about how your computer works, you may actually want to know what a ‘CPU’ is.

The term ‘CPU’ stands for central processing unit and it is the brain of your computer. Just like your brain, the CPU works in conjunction with a computer’s memory to carry out specific commands and tasks. CPUs are also simply known as processors.

If you have ever read any other articles on CPUs, it can sometimes be difficult to decipher exactly what the central processing unit of your computer actually does. However, you do not really need to be a technically inclined person to understand how the brain of your computer works.

The first step of operation for the CPU is to store instructions in the memory of the computer. Whenever you run a program on your system, specific instructions from the program are sent to the memory and stored. The central processing unit then accesses the memory, retrieves the instructions, and then prepares to execute them.

Before the CPU can execute the instructions it has received from the memory, it must first decode them. After the instructions have been de-encrypted, your CPU will execute them and then returns some sort of result. This result may include storing information in the memory or on the hard drive or displaying something to your screen. Whatever the instruction directs the CPU to do, it does. The speed and performance of your CPU/processor determines how quickly the task is completed.

Your CPU may also have what is known as a CPU cache which also helps to speed up its performance. The cache memory is smaller and faster than the main memory of the computer and stores copies of frequently used information so that it does not have to access the main memory every time it performs a process.

Whenever your computer’s processor wants to access the main memory for instructions, it will first check to see if that information is already in its cache. If it is already stored there, then CPU reads it from the cache location, which is quicker than accessing the main memory since cache memory is local.

Phishing is an effort on the part of criminals to obtain personal information over the Internet through fraudulent means. These scammers are specifically looking for usernames, passwords, and credit card or bank information. They send email messages or instant messages to their victims, trying to direct them to a fake version of a real website. When people are deceived into entering their sensitive information, the scammer takes their information and can steal their money and identity or commit other fraudulent activities.

Why should financial institutions care about phishing attacks aimed at their customers? There are several reasons. First, phishing is a genuine threat, not only to their customers, but to their company as well. Financial institutions are targeted more often than any other business. It is estimated that over 90% of phishing attacks are aimed at customers of banks and credit card companies. The numbers have been rising, too. In 2006, 2.3 million people were victims; the number increased to 3.6 million in 2007. Of these statistics, smaller institutions are phished more often than larger ones, because they are a more lucrative target due to the expense of adequate security measures.

Banks and other financial companies should have a plan to address the case of a scammer phishing for information. No bank would be able to operate without a plan of escape in the case of a fire. Most banks have a button that alerts the police to a robbery. These situations place the bank in a precarious position-they could quickly escalate to a major emergency. Phishing attacks are designed to work quickly. After a person enters his or her information into a website, it only takes minutes for the scammers to use it to their own benefit. Often this will happen automatically-the scammer has an automated withdrawal of information or funds, and the phished website will then redirect the victim back to the real website. In a fire, if there is no organized plan of escape, by the time everyone figures out what to do, it may be too late. The same result is true in a case of phishing: if an employee does not already know how to respond, in the amount of time necessary to find the correct phone numbers to call or the proper procedures to follow, the scammer may already have stolen thousands of dollars and disappeared.

It is a fact that people will talk to others about the bad things that happen in their lives. If several friends say that they have been fooled by phishing from a particular financial institution, others may be more likely to do their business elsewhere. Many community banks rely on customer satisfaction and customer referrals to sustain their existence. If they have even two or three major phishing problems, their very survival may be at stake. For the sake of growing their businesses and staying afloat, financial organizations must do everything possible to protect their customers.

Perhaps the most important reason that banks, credit unions, and other financial establishments should have an incident response plan in place is that they are required by Federal Examiners!

Although many smaller financial institutions may think that, in spite of the good that can come from an incident response plan against phishing attacks, the programs to combat phishing are still too expensive for them. Most of the programs, however, are designed for preventative maintenance. An incident response plan simply requires employees of the financial organization to be educated to recognize warning signs of a phishing attack. If they cannot close the phishing site personally, they need a list of companies and professionals and contact information to enable them to call someone who can shut down the site. Because the effort is so minimal, every financial institution, no matter how big or small, should have an incident response plan.

Sophisticated Attacks on Community Financial Institutions Increasing!

In today’s high tech world, maintaining the privacy and protection of customers and employees’ information grows more and more difficult particularly for many financial institutions. These days’ scammers are getting bolder and more brazen in their abilities to get personal information from banking customers as they aggressively target the smaller locally owned community financial institutions.
In fact, a recent customer reported a complex, malicious, and targeted attack took place on their institution’s customers and employees. A well-recognized phishing activity trends website reported that financial institutions saw a continuing rise in phishing activities with 92.5% of attacks targeted on financial institutions.

On average, a phishing site stays online for 3.8 days. The relevance to the number of days online is that the longer it remains online, the more possibilities for the scammer to gather personal information. It is imperative that we are prepared for this type of incident and the response that is needed.

Phishing and Pharming Attacks
There was a time when only the larger financial institutions such as Wells Fargo bank were targeted for phishing and pharming scams, but that’s no longer the case. The increase in phishing attacks on community financial institutions stems from the fact that smaller financial institutions are simply more profitable and are usually less protected from fraudulent activities.

As mentioned above, one of our local community financial institutions was hit with a complex and sophisticated vishing/pharming/phishing telephone scam that focused on customers as well as on the bank’s employees. Fortunately, we have been preparing our client for years for these types of attacks, and therefore they were on the alert, so the attack caused minimum disruption.
Sharp customers and employees recognized that the e-mail messages were a scam because of poor grammar and content in addition to the salutation being addressed to "member" or some other non-descript person. A genuine message from a financial institution always addresses the customer by their full name. Furthermore, the scams did not provide a means for contacting the institution if there were any questions, but instead told the customers and employees in the e-mail message not to reply. No legitimate institution would ever tell you not to reply.

But even with preparation and after years of working in the Internet security arena, we were surprised at the combination of attack vectors used.

Combination of Attack Vectors
The scammers’ used a variety of strategies starting with a mass email and pharming scam as an attempt to steal personal information using a Do-IT-Yourself Phishing kit. The initial attack was then followed up with telephone calls to certain area codes with spoofed numbers and using a technique called Vishing. Besides, using pharming, phishing, and vishing tactics aimed at stealing valuable information such as credit cards, social security numbers, IDs and passwords, the attackers didn’t stop there.
The scammers also included Spear Phishing, an email spoofing fraud that targets financial institution employees in an attempt to gain unauthorized access to confidential data. Because of the banks watchful eye, they caught it in time, but these types of attacks are getting bolder and more commonplace and require a great deal more vigilance in keeping personal information away from scammers.

Why Customers Are Fooled
Approximately 19% of recipients respond to Spear-Phishing, which today is one of the most menacing threats to Internet users. Unfortunately, users do not clearly understand the importance of checking for authenticity, which should include specific indications that the site they are being sent to is secure.
As a busy society, we are so focused on getting the job done quickly and efficiently, we often don’t check for important clues, which is why many users receiving messages or paying bills online don’t watch out for the clues that indicate whether an e-mail message or site is fraudulent.

An Incident Response Plan
As these scams are on the rise in financial institutions, if a financial institution is prepared, and in today’s world, they have to be, the consequences will be minimal. In the event of phishing and pharming scams, staff members in a financial institution should know how to deal with this type of situation effectively.

To ensure the customer’s safety and privacy, an incident response plan should be in place and is required by examiners to be in place. Included in the plan should be an organized approach as to how the problem is going to be handled as well as having a clearly laid out plan to address the situation.

The following should be considered in regard to an Incident Response Plan:
1. Start by assessing the situation so that you know exactly what your bank is dealing with; if an incident has occurred, it’s usually up to the CEO and CIO to handle the overall incident response along with members of a CSIRT.
2. Fight the attacker
1. Educating the end user
2. Redirecting pharming clicks to an education page (most attacks are pulling images from your site)
3. Attempt to shut down the phishing site yourself
4. If needed have a competent vendor to respond to the situation for counter attack; this helps identify who will take down the website as well as which agencies to contact.
5. Exploit the phishing website
6. Communicate with customers
1. Post Bulletins on Website to ensure customers are aware of the situation
2. Have employees assure customers that security controls are in place for the institution.
7. Contact authorities such as Secret Service, FBI; in addition, contact Financial Service Vendors for support on abnormal activity on customer accounts.
8. Feed bogus information to the pharmed sites.
9. Review abnormal activities on Customer Accounts and bogus accounts
10. Implement 3rd party monitoring companies
This is not intended to be a complete incident response plan, but trigger the thought process on items to be covered.

Preventative Actions
At one time or another your institution will be affected by a fraud scam, therefore being prepared with a good response plan for employees as well as providing customer education, in addition to having the resources (either in-house or outsourced) to handle the problem efficiently and effectively are the most effective preventive actions.

Prevention of course is primary insofar as keeping phishing and pharming scams at bay, and therefore as a preventive measure, customers who use online banking in any financial institution should be warned to use caution when opening any type of email with links that appear to come from their financial institution. Even if the message looks legitimate, prudence is always best. Educate customers to be proactive rather than reactive.
Alert customers not to click any links that come in emails, especially if they appear somewhat suspicious. In addition, if the customer has any doubt about the e-mail message, alert the customer to call their financial institution directly to determine whether it could potentially be a phishing or pharming scam.
Provide customers with Security Awareness Training by developing a web page about information disclosure in addition to providing a closely monitored email address for this activity should be set up by your institution where customers can send suspicious activities.

Data leaks are increasingly becoming a challenge in security concerns with the unprecedented rise in communication mediums. Most data leaks are unintentional rather than deliberate, but can nevertheless cause irreparable damage to a company’s clientele, reputation, or compliance requirements for maintaining confidentiality.

Despite the widespread implementation of security devices such as firewalls and data encryption, data theft is still a relatively common phenomenon. There are many causes of security breaches: one third of data leakages in the previous year occurred because of virus attacks and another third through frauds committed by insiders with access to high security data.

It’s imperative to keep track of where sensitive data is being transferred and to monitor the channels of communication being used by those who have access to confidential data.
3. Create standardized data security policies. Data leaks are not just a security concern, they can have an overall impact on your business and the quality of your work ethic. Standardized regulations or data distribution policies can help you guard your sensitive information so that it cannot fall into the wrong hands.

Many solutions are targeted toward incident response, but effective measures of prevention also need to be implemented to prevent incidents from occurring.
